- This is a brand new website or blog about biology and faith. Written by a Dutch biology teacher in Belgium near Brussels, the capitol of Europe. When he started his student at the Utrecht University in The Netherlands (‘Holland’, for those who don’t know where The Netherlands are) he was practically an agnostic type of youngster. That was in the late seventies, when a major shift in western societies took place, with in this country a dramatic fall in church attendance, and considerable changes in social, political and moral view on major issues concerning personal and social life. But a former class mate told him about ‘charismatic renewal’, a movement that tries to live as the early Christians did, inspired by the Holy Spirit. It took the biology student five years to decide to go and have a look at these weird people, singing and praising endlessly ‘the Lord’. Which led to the decision to spend an evening on reflecting about the question: ‘What am I ? A socialist (very common in those days, a conservative, a liberal, a Christian? It was during that evening, January tenth 1980, that after some time he decided to do something that these ‘charismatics’ tended to do one in a while: opening up a bible and just reading what comes before your eyes. And what he got appeared to be an exact answer to what was going on in his mind. He was sort of writing down his thoughts, could not find a satisfying conclusion for his life, and then opened up this little bible that he had had to buy for high school. And it said in Luc’s gospel, chapter 21, verses 13 to 15: “This will be a time for you to serve as witnesses. Therefore be resolved not to rehearse ahead of time how to make your defense. For I will give you the words along with the wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.”. It was as if someone was looking over his shoulder, knowing what he was doing, and giving him advise. “You should not be so worried about your defense”. The need to defend his position was something he had always felt, especially in his family. And his own words and wisdom had failed. But this Person would give him something far better: words and wisdom that none of his adversaries would be able to withstand or contradict! Wasn’t that marvelous! But than came for a moment this doubt: “Is this real? Or am I making this up in my mind? But it took him not long to conclude that it was unreasonable to think that such a precise answer to his thoughts would be a matter of pure coincidence. So he decided to believe. And a tremendous joy came over him. Imagine yourself: the living God, creator of heaven and earth took time to talk to him personally. Later on, at his wedding, he got a present from his brother: the book of Confessions of Augustine of Hippo, forth century. And this great person in the history of Christianity appeared to have had a similar experience, in a garden, with a voice that came from behind and a book with the letters of the apostle Paul. Words that touched his heart and made him a Christian by conversion. So our biology student found himself in good company!
- This site will be the result of a sincere reflection that took place from this day in January 1980 in Holland till upon this day. This reflection was at first orientated towards questions on creation and biological evolution, later broadened to the relationship between science and religion. In the second place, this reflection dealt with alls questions on sexuality and relationships, where biological knowledge and moral theology were confronted with one another. Than, in the third place, his path of thinking headed for the many bioethical questions that are so characteristic for our time.
- This site will be made in the slipstream of the Dutch Biofides site, and there will also be a French version. These sites can not exist without you support:
- by your input and reactions
- by your questions
- by your prayer
- by your financial support
- For the latter, a Pay Pall button will be placed in order to make payments easier for you.
- The site is meant for all interested people. It is not meant to be a scientifical website, put a popular one. But we will not allow ourselves to express thoughts that are incompatible with science, both theological, philosophical, anthropological or biological insights. Therefore your critical reactions are most wellcome. And last but not least: who is this guy we are talking about? It is me! Vincent Kemme. Look at his beautiful picture and we will know by our statistics to what extend he frightens you! It is also the person who is writing this first post, and hopes to meet you again, despite his appearance, on this blog. God bless you!
